Mermaid concept - Layla

First things first, I began by looking into designs for my main character Layla.

Layla was an interesting character to work on as she went through a massive development process before I eventually came up with the final design for her.

One thing I knew straight away was that I didn't want her to be a typical Ariel Mermaid but rather a creature that seemed more adapted to the underwater world.

A lot of work went into every detail about her from the colour of her skin, to how big her fins would be.

After going through all these designs and working with a lot of possible looks I chose to go with the design shown in the turnarounds below. The blue of her skin I liked as it helped to relate her to her environment as well as giving her a more fishy person like quality rather than being a boring human in a boring fish tail costume look.

University Major project idea

I haven't blogged anything in a long time so I decided to post some work relating to what I have been working on for the last few weeks.

I've chosen to work in uncharted territory in terms of stop motion and have decided to work with Mermaids and under water for my final animation.

The film i have in mind is titled 'Weeping Mer' and follows the story of a young Mermaid named 'Layla' who has been driven out of her homeland due to being framed for killing a fellow Mermaid. She is approached by a Sea witch disguised as a second mermaid who offers her a chance to escape this nightmare and journey with her to the ocean floor.

At the moment the idea is still in the concept stage but I thought i would post some stuff just to show you what I have been working on over the last few weeks.

The Mermaid shown in the two slides here is our main girl known as Layla. Her job will be to narrate the story as she journeys through the ocean scape of the animation.
Below is the antagonist known as "Lorelei'. At the moment however she is only a rough sketch but I will soon have more work explaining her in more detail soon.
